Art & History Family Studio 2030

ART & HISTORY FAMILY STUDIO 2030 – AUGUST 2024

FAMILY STUDIO
Drop-in play & activities area for families with (small) children and youngsters. As part of the festival Horizon 2030.
Unleash your creativity using interesting materials at the ATELIER tables or come and play with toys for all ages. Attend a kamishibai storytelling session, browse through the library, or just hang out. Spend a couple of hours, or a whole day, we promise you you will not be bored!
Want to go further? Then sign up for the FESTIVAL SPECIALS! On Thursdays, we will dive deeper into the Festival’s theme: Belgium’s (upcoming) 200th anniversary. Facing that horizon, we first travel back to the 18th century, a time of elaborate wigs and chocolate, of revolutions and inventions. It’s here that the idea of a Belgian state first emerged.

OUTDOOR PAVILJOEN
Outdoor play pavilion for families with (small) children and youngsters.
During the month of August, a small wooden construction pops up on the green in front of the main entrance of the Art & History Museum. This curious looking building, something between a beach cabin and a tree house, may look strange, but do not let that fool you: here is your base from which to conquer the entire Cinquantenaire Park!
Play folk games, build large-scale constructions and experiment with flying contraptions; hold water balloon competitions, sessions of urban golf or pétanque, or break the world record for cherry pit spitting. So bring friends and family and play, relax and, enjoy.

PRACTICAL
The outdoor pavilion is accessible from Thursday to Sunday, from 08/08 through 01/09/2024
From 12:00 to 20:00.
Closed on Mondays-Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Admission free.

FESTIVAL SPECIALS ON THURSDAY

DESIGN – 08/08/2024
From garden design to decorating your own interior, from making corsets to silhouette portraits. The lifestyle of an 18th-century fashionista was quite interesting, even if you had to spend it in clothes that were not very comfortable… Powdered wigs, hoop skirts and finely embroidered shoes for him and her: we will look, design and capture. Photography didn’t exist yet, but lovely shadow portraits did, or maybe you prefer selfies? Let’s see what we can make!

GRAPHIC – 15/08/2024
From elegant handwritten letters to printed books, from ornate motifs to intricate designs on silver dishes. Check out the stylish 18th century writing case and try your hand at writing with a quill. Study the decorations and shapes of 18th-century utensils such as fans and glass and create your own pattern. In short: get creative during this decorative arts workshop – not just for romantics!

SCIENCE – 22/08/2024
From the pocket watch to the hot air balloon, from the steam engine to the first software programme. We explore the timeline of fascinating inventions and, of course, get to experiment ourselves. How do you make a clock run on time? How do you make crystal, or a mirror? And can we put together a book describing the natural world scientifically? These and other questions were preoccupying 18th century scientists, now you can have a go at finding answers!

PARTY! – 29/08/2024
From sweet to salty, from sour to bitter: let’s cook because we are going to party like it’s 1799! Let’s whip up some hot chocolate in the chocolatière like the most fashionable 18th century people did (OK, we can’t actually use museum pieces, but we can look at it all the same!). Haven’t got a sweet tooth? Don’t worry, we will make some contemporary favourites: from ‘cool’ gazpacho to fresh sushi rolls and homemade pizza. Guaranteed fun for all you party people!
